In a significant development on August 23, 2023, two individuals originating from Visakhapatnam were apprehended by the Telangana Police for their involvement in a cunning ganja smuggling operation. The illicit substance in question hailed from Odisha and was destined for Maharashtra, according to official sources.
The detainees, Varun Kumar Patnaik (24) and Bhuvan (20), both natives of Odisha, were laboring away at a hardware store in Vizag, barely making ends meet. Varun, a recent graduate who had migrated to the city after his marriage, found himself in dire financial straits. Fatefully, he crossed paths with Bhuvan, a colleague at the hardware store, who was facing similar challenges.
Enter Suresh, a figure with connections to local ganja smuggling networks. Recognizing an opportunity, Suresh roped in Varun and Bhuvan, offering them an enticing deal – a commission of Rs 2 lakhs in exchange for successfully transporting the contraband. This arrangement involved smuggling around 100 Kilos Ganja, valued at a staggering Rs 35 lakhs, from Odisha to Pune, skirting through Telangana.
Executing their ill-conceived plan, the duo embarked on their ganja-laden journey. However, law enforcement received a timely tip-off about their activities. Swiftly, a trap was set along the Keesara Outer Ring Road (ORR) in Telangana. It was on this fateful day that the police pounced, nabbing the smugglers red-handed. The operation led to the confiscation of the prohibited substance, two mobile phones, and the very vehicle used in the smuggling endeavor.
As the investigation unravels, two crucial players in this web of illicit trade – Suresh and Chotu, a smuggler hailing from Maharashtra – have managed to evade capture, presently remaining at large. Authorities are intensifying their efforts to track down these absconders and delve deeper into the intricate workings of this smuggling network.
