Former Odisha minister and Assembly Speaker Maheswar Mohanty has passed away

Senior BJD leader and former Odisha Assembly Speaker Maheswar Mohanty passed away at a private hospital. He was 67 years old and is survived by his wife and two sons. Mohanty was admitted to the hospital on November 1 after a cerebral stroke and passed away early on Tuesday morning.

He was elected five times to the Odisha Assembly from the Puri constituency, initially as a Janata Dal candidate in 1995 and later as a BJD nominee in 2000, 2004, 2009, and 2014. Born on February 26, 1956, Mohanty served in the Naveen Patnaik government as a cabinet minister, overseeing various departments such as Panchayati Raj, Revenue, Law, and Tourism between 2011 and 2019.

He had also served as the Assembly Speaker from 2004 to 2008. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed his condolences, praising Mohanty’s organizational skills and his contributions to the development of Puri as an MLA and minister.
