Mayor James Brainard of Carmel, Indiana, USA, praised Visakhapatnam as an attractive city that serves as a model for other places. The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) organized the ‘Clean Eco Awards Inauguration’ and ‘Clean Diwali Signature Campaign’ at the Kali Mata Temple on RK Beach. During the event, Mayor Golagani Harivenkatakumari unveiled the logo and brochure for the James Swachhata Eco-Vizag Award.
James Brainard mentioned that Visakhapatnam is a popular tourist destination, especially for its natural beauty. He also highlighted how Visakhapatnam is gaining global recognition through GVMC’s Swachhta Eco Vizag initiatives. Mayor Golagani added that GVMC is fostering healthy competition among its wards to become cleaner and greener.
Wards that excel in cleanliness, based on third-party agency surveys, will receive cash prizes of Rs. 20 lakh, Rs. 10 lakh, and Rs. 5 lakh for the first, second, and third positions, respectively. The guidelines from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs promote celebrating a pollution-free, plastic-free, and eco-friendly Haritha Diwali (Green Diwali).
They also encourage people to participate in a ‘Swachh Diwali – Happy Diwali’ campaign by taking a selfie at a designated booth, scanning a QR code, and sharing the photo on social media. The event was attended by Deputy Mayor Jiyani Sridhar, corporators Peddinti Ushasree, Reiyi Venkataramana, Bipin Kumar Jain, Bhishetti Vasantha, GVMC Additional Commissioner Srinivasa Rao, and others.
