Visakhapatnam International Airport, which is managed by the Indian Navy, is getting ready for a significant runway resurfacing project starting on November 15. Several airlines have decided to cancel their night flights due to this project.
The winter flight schedule released by these airlines confirms that there will be no night services available during this period. The runway resurfacing project is scheduled to take place from November 15, 2023, to April 1, 2024, which means the runway will be temporarily closed at night, from 9 PM to 8 AM. This development will have a notable impact on both airlines and passengers. Flights connecting major destinations like Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, as well as Scoot Airlines, which connects to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, and Australia, will be affected.
K Vijaya Mohan of the Tours and Travel Operators Association of Andhra Pradesh has expressed concerns about the closure of night operations at Vizag. According to the current winter flight schedule, there will be no night flights available after 8:30 PM and before 8 PM, with the last flight departing from Visakhapatnam International Airport scheduled for 8:30 PM.
Visakhapatnam International Airport, serving 2.85 million passengers annually, is expected to reach the three million mark in the upcoming year. Airport Director S Raja Reddy has also revealed plans to expand the airport’s flight options with the addition of new flights to various destinations by Spice Jet in the coming financial year. The runway resurfacing project will be carried out during the night, with contractors working in short bursts to complete sections overnight and reopening them for daytime operations.
